If you want to read some wonderful books, we highly recommend Joel Salatins books, You Can Farm and Family Friendly Farming. Two other great books by Mr.Salatin that we have recently enjoyed are, “Folks, This Ain’t Normal”, and “The Sheer Ecstacy of Being a Lunatic Farmer”. We really respect Mr. Salatin and his wealth of knowledge on family farming. He is a pioneer in recent years, in rotating animals on your land and grass feeding them all….the truly best way to raise animals. Healthy for the land and healthy for the animals!
Another informative and thought provoking book is “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” by Michael Pollan. This book challenges our thinking on what we eat and where our food comes from! All good things to think about.
If you are looking for some helpful and enjoyable magazines to read, check these out! We just love these magazines…they’ve been very helpful to us as we go along on our farming journey.

OUR RABBITS
Our daughters purchased 2 Angora Rabbits last year. They have enjoyed brushing the hair of these little bunnies and getting all of this wonderfully soft angora wool.
My elder daughter hopes to spin it all on her drop spindle..she’s our little knitter in the family. My youngest daughter has named her rabbit, Willow and the other one is Freesia Fern. The rest of us call them our cute little fluff balls!
Our eldest son has recently purchased a breeding pair of meat rabbits, New Zealand Whites.
He plans to breed them and raise the babies for meat…we can’t wait to enjoy some juicy rabbit meat this winter!
We are also trying our hand at sheep this year….we are excited to have the fiber for spinning, and the meat as well. We purchased a Romney Ewe with her 2 lambs, as well as a ram for Fall breeding. We are also trying our hand at pigs this summer. We are raising 3 pigs to fatten up for lots of sausage and bacon this winter! We have also worked out a trade with some of our goats being traded for 3 alpacas! We are excited to be bringing one breeding male and 2 breeding females here to the farm…we look forward to having them cut our grass and give us rich manure for our garden! The hypoallergenic fleece that they will give us is also very exciting to the knitters in our family!
We are thankful for these new adventures!
“Perhaps your contribution to mankind will be to give the next generation a head start.”
